The Purpose of Education

Book Review: The Humanities and Public Life

June 17, 2014 by Bob Trube Leave a Comment

The Humanities and Public Life  edited by  Peter Brooks with Hilary Jewett  (Bronx: Fordham University Press, 2014). My rating: 3 of 5 stars. There is no question but that the humanities are under fire. Budgets are being cut, sometimes whole departments. How then to justify the humanities within the university, without accepting “instrumentalization”, a term thrown around much in this book, which means roughly, being able to demonstrate some “deliverable” or bottom line worth. Peter Brooks, the editor of … [Read more...] about Book Review: The Humanities and Public Life

Engaging the whole university for Christ

June 13, 2014 by Tom Grosh IV Leave a Comment

Are we going to treat the campus as a whole as our mission field? What if Christ really, truly engaged the whole university? This is a great, bold and magnificent vision.  The Marks of a Christian Teacher: A Vocational Description (Part Two)[1] Mark Eckel, ThM PhD, Professor of Leadership, Education & Discipleship Capital Seminary & Graduate School, Washington, D.C. The true function of the teacher is to create the most favorable conditions for self-learning. True teaching is not that which gives knowledge, but that which stimulates pupils to gain it. One might say that he teaches best who teaches least.[2] “I do not want you to believe anything I tell you.”   My mantra was … [Read more...] about Owning education

Christian Engagement in the Renewing of Higher Education

March 2, 2014 by Tom Grosh IV Leave a Comment

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this Lord's day may you find encouragement in  Santa Ono's presentation on  Christian Engagement in the Renewing of Higher Education (1:48:45). May you be inspired  as the President of the U. of Cincinnati[1]  gives testimony to  how his life has been and continues to be shaped by his relationship with God and the people of God (including members of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship) in relationship to the wider culture -- even in the "small city" of the university and the … [Read more...] about Christian Engagement in the Renewing of Higher Education
