Kuyper’s Vision of Sin and Redemption

September 12, 2014 by Dan Jesse 4 Comments

Second post in a series  drawing from and interacting with Richard Mouw's  Abraham Kuyper: A Short and Personal Introduction  (Eerdmans, 2011). If you missed it, you may desire to start at the beginning of the series with The Lure of Kuyper. Following the biblical narrative, Kuyper holds: when Eve and Adam succumbed to the Serpent's challenge, then, they turned their wills away from God and placed their ultimate trust in something less than God. (Mouw, 10) This turning of the will, not necessarily the act, is … [Read more...] about Kuyper’s Vision of Sin and Redemption

Devotions: Bearing the Image of God (2)

May 18, 2014 by Carl Shank Leave a Comment

Genesis 3 tells the tragic story of the famous (or infamous) fall of the first humans into sin and corruption. Because of a choice that took them out of their assigned place in creation, under God but like God, their insistence on being “gods” distorted the image of God in them. Instead of derivative, yet creative knowledge, they disobeyed their “prime directive.” The penalty was not merely final physical death, but painful, hard-won work, struggling with creation instead of working with God's created order. Their … [Read more...] about Devotions: Bearing the Image of God (2)

Book Review: Exclusion & Embrace

September 17, 2013 by Bob Trube Leave a Comment

How do we engage the rich diversity of campus life as 'groups' come together and engage the 'outsider' in the new term? Miroslav Volf's  Exclusion & Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness, and Reconciliation  (Abingdon Press,  1996) has some material to offer.  Read. Review.  Share. Note to all our readers: As I have done previously, I encourage you to read a book before you comment upon it :) It's my intention that reviews such as those offered by Bob will not only provide opportunity for … [Read more...] about Book Review: Exclusion & Embrace

Who’s Afraid of Angels and Aliens, Alienation and Etcetera?

June 1, 2012 by Roy Joseph 2 Comments

Socially speaking, as opposed to orations in solipsism, it can be quite alienating to bring up the promises and perils of alien life, especially in the middle of a serious conversation.  By aliens, I do not mean our fellow human beings who rarely ever garner the support of rabid nationalists anywhere. Imagine the late Jean Marie Le-Pen breaking a baguette with a North African immigrant, not for the sake of a photo‐shoot but out of a genuine sense of ubi caritas et amor.   It is nearly impossible to persuade an … [Read more...] about Who’s Afraid of Angels and Aliens, Alienation and Etcetera?

Finding Calcutta: “call awareness” w/o losing “Caller dependence”

November 3, 2011 by Tom Grosh IV Leave a Comment

Questions to explore: What is the definition of calling? What are biblical characteristics of "finding" one's calling? Who comes to mind as examples of biblical characters who “found” their calling? What are sins that undermine our calling and we should be prepared to address? Definitions of Calling [T]he truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that everything we are, everything we do, and everything we have is invested with a special devotion and dynamism lived out as a response to his … [Read more...] about Finding Calcutta: “call awareness” w/o losing “Caller dependence”
