April 12, 2012 by Anonymous Leave a Comment

Below is the final piece of a 4-part series by an anonymous contributor, a recent PhD recipient who has been involved with ESN and wanted to share lessons he learned during graduate school. In the fall he will begin teaching at a private Christian university. Praise God! Click here to read Part 1, click here to read Part 2, and  click here to read Part 3 -- be sure to check out the helpful conversation in the comment section on  9. Don't be afraid to be known as a fanatical Christ-follower. ~ … [Read more...] about 13 Ways of Looking at Graduate School: Part 4

The Lanterns, in Battersea

The  Faculty Ministry Lamp Post  —our sister ministry's monthly email chronicle  —was published earlier today, and I'd like to draw your attention to a few highlights that might interest you. David Thomas, history professor at Union University, reviews the recent collection Teaching and Christian Practices, edited by James K. A. Smith and David I. Smith. I am looking forward to reading David's review, since I reviewed the book earlier this month for Comment, and I look forward to seeing what an honest-to-goodness … [Read more...] about Highlights from this month’s Lamp Post

Call for Proposals: 2012 CSF-ESN Grant to Advance Christian Scholarship

Further, CSF has demonstrated truly excellent discernment and great breadth in choosing its grantees. The 2011 recipient was  Winnie Fong, Assistant Professor of Economics at Wheaton College, for her  project "Short and Long-Term Health and Economic … [Read more...] about Call for Proposals: 2012 CSF-ESN Grant to Advance Christian Scholarship

Can Christian Faith Sustain the Life of the Mind?

January 17, 2012 by Richard Hughes 3 Comments

We continue our guest series from Richard Hughes on the vocation of Christian scholars. The following post is adapted from Richard's book, The Vocation of a Christian Scholar: How Christian Faith Can Sustain the Life of the Mind (Eerdmans, 2005). In the first post of this series, I made the point that “those of us who are both Christians and scholars will inevitably live in the midst of a deep and inescapable paradox.” The paradox is this – that as Christians, we are committed to a highly particularistic … [Read more...] about Can Christian Faith Sustain the Life of the Mind?

Top Read Posts of 2011

January 10, 2012 by Micheal Hickerson Leave a Comment

Periodically, we like to look back to see what our most popular posts have been.  We did this in 2009, in July 2010, and again last December. You can also see a running log of our top posts. Popularity isn't everything, but Tom and I like to keep tabs on what generates interest and spurs conversation. Here are the most popular posts we published this past year. Jesus Didn't Choose Scholars’    (which was also our most commented-upon post of the year) What I Wish I'd Known: Balancing Life and Graduate School … [Read more...] about Top Read Posts of 2011
