Why “Christian Apologetics”? — Hell

September 1, 2011 by Tom Grosh IV 4 Comments

One of the ways in which the damned will be condemned is that they will see themselves condemned by their own reason, by which they claimed to condemn the Christian religion. -- Blaise Pascal. Penses. ed. and trans. A. Krailsheimer (New York: Penguin, 1966), 175/563, p. 84. In  To skim or not to skim: A ‘case' study of “Christian Apologetics”, I share my initial response to  Douglas Groothuis'  newly released 752 page casebound  Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for the Biblical Faith  (IVP. 2011). As we … [Read more...] about Why “Christian Apologetics”? — Hell

To skim or not to skim: A ‘case’ study of “Christian Apologetics”

August 25, 2011 by Tom Grosh IV 5 Comments

As Douglas Groothuis'  newly released 752 page casebound  Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for the Biblical Faith  (IVP. 2011) spilled out of the box onto the counter in front of my four girls, I felt the press of two book reviews, a stack of material to read for three seminary classes, and various  responsibilities at home, church and work. How did I respond? Thankfully, earlier in the day I had read Hannah's ESN blog post  What I Wish I'd Known About Graduate School: Surviving the Workload  (8/23/2011), in … [Read more...] about To skim or not to skim: A ‘case’ study of “Christian Apologetics”

Do We See the People or Their Poverty?

August 1, 2011 by Kami L. Rice Leave a Comment

Kami Rice continues her guest series  for the Emerging Scholars Blog  about her journey to India.   Since the day my high school youth group reported to our congregation about our mission trip to Brazil, when some of the other kids–some of whom had discussed, as we drove through Miami during our debriefing time, which fancy new car they wanted their parents to buy for them–poured stories into the microphone about how poor the people were, I've had an uneasy relationship with how church people talk about … [Read more...] about Do We See the People or Their Poverty?

Heading East: Kami in India

July 25, 2011 by Kami L. Rice 7 Comments

I'm pleased to introduce our second guest blogger of the summer and our first international correspondent.  Kami L. Rice  recently joined InterVarsity staff to work with graduate and professional students in Nashville, but she has extensive experience as a freelance writer  with a large number of credits to her name. Kami is in the middle of a 4-week journey to India. She plans to connect with students and faculty while there, but she begins her series this week with reflections on a previous trip to India  and on the … [Read more...] about Heading East: Kami in India

Do You Have a Mission Statement? Part II

November 4, 2010 by Tom Grosh IV 2 Comments

The Call by Os Guinness

Introduction Since I only had one respondent to Do You Have a Mission Statement?, maybe this topic is even more important than I thought (or maybe it's been overdone.   Feel free to comment on this topic if you desire).   As you may remember, I'm sharing my notes from a presentation by a physician who spoke to the PSU-Hershey Christian Medical Society.   Good material!   My purpose is to stimulate conversation/thought on: “Do you have a personal mission statement? If so, how did you come about one?   Was this a part … [Read more...] about Do You Have a Mission Statement? Part II
