Help ESN Choose a Devotional Name

July 24, 2014 by Hannah Eagleson 15 Comments

Thank you so much for your response to our academic devotional survey  last week! We're thrilled to have so many graduate students and faculty participating already, from a wide variety of institutions including state and private universities, engineering institutions, and universities in the UK and Australia. Thanks so much to everyone who participated so far. We'll be in touch soon! If you haven't filled out the survey  yet, we'd love to hear your thoughts. Soon, the devotional needs a name. Here's a list of some … [Read more...] about Help ESN Choose a Devotional Name

Help ESN Create a Devotional for Scholars

July 18, 2014 by Hannah Eagleson Leave a Comment

The Emerging Scholars Network is launching an exciting new writing/community building project  [Scholar's Compass launched Fall 2014], and we'd love for you to participate. If you're interested, please fill out the survey below or drop us an email.   Many Christian scholars struggle to link their faith and their academic callings: it's hard to find time to reflect, and sometimes hard to find a community excited to integrate faith and academic vocation. InterVarsity's new project will build a community of Christian … [Read more...] about Help ESN Create a Devotional for Scholars

Sorrow, Joy, and Academic Community on 9/11

September 11, 2012 by Micheal Hickerson 1 Comment

et-cetera-issue-f2

I was ready to write my second post about T.M. Luhrmann's When God Talks Back when memories of this day intruded. September 11 is a complicated day for me. Here's what I wrote back in 2007: [On Sept. 11, 2001], I met Debbie Erickson on the way to our first Hebrew class of the year at Regent College. We were both biking down University Drive at about 7:30 am PST. “Have you heard?” Debbie asked me. By that time, both towers have come down. Because I had not turned on a TV or radio that morning, this is the first time … [Read more...] about Sorrow, Joy, and Academic Community on 9/11

ESN Interview: Alissa Wilkinson

June 7, 2010 by Micheal Hickerson Leave a Comment

This is the last of four interviews Micheal conducted at the 2010  Jubilee conference. Alissa Wilkinson  has a professional life that probably looks like a particular niche of ESN members. At the time of the interview she was editing  The Curator for the  International Arts Movement, while teaching writing at The King's College and serving as Associate Editor for Comment. In 2014 she serves as chief film critic at  Christianity Today Movies, Assistant Professor of English and Humanities at  The King's College  and … [Read more...] about ESN Interview: Alissa Wilkinson

What is your relationship to reading and writing?

April 21, 2010 by Tom Grosh IV Leave a Comment

Great question.   Do you resonate with the response Rachel Toor received from a graduate class in physical education? When we were wrapping up, I asked them a question: "What is your relationship to reading and writing?" At that moment, they morphed from T-shirt-clad physical specimens and became generic graduate students, indistinguishable from all-in-black, cigarette-smoking studiers of literary theory and bearded-and-geeky future scientists. It's all we do, they wailed, and it's hard. ... The journal articles he … [Read more...] about What is your relationship to reading and writing?
