Q&A with Acton Institute’s Jordan Ballor (and a Free Subscription)

September 7, 2011 by Micheal Hickerson Leave a Comment

This summer, I posted a link to the Acton Institute's Calihan Fellowship on the ESN Facebook Page  without really thinking much besides, "Oh, here's some grant money for someone out there." I never expected that it would lead to the most vigorous conversation to date on our Facebook Page, ranging from disagreements about the Acton Institute in particular to broader issues of politics, academia, and theology. This certainly caught my attention, since ESN, in general, doesn't host all that many internal controversies. … [Read more...] about Q&A with Acton Institute’s Jordan Ballor (and a Free Subscription)

Quote: Chesterton on Childlike Delight

July 13, 2011 by Hannah Eagleson 1 Comment

Continuing our Summer Quotation Series from Hannah Eagleson. The second quotation in this series comes from G. K. Chesterton, good-humored apologist and writer: A child kicks his legs rhythmically through excess, not absence, of life. Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, "Do it again"; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to … [Read more...] about Quote: Chesterton on Childlike Delight

What Will You Be Reading This Summer?

Beach reading in Vancouver

Today is official the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, which means, of course, it's time for summer reading lists. Before I get to my own list: What's on your summer reading list? I tend to follow Alan Jacobs' advice and read according to whim, but here are a few books or series that I want/hope to read this summer. I'm notoriously bad for failing to follow through on reading commitments and for losing focus partway through a book, so view this list as merely aspirational. Who Are Your Heroes?

October 5, 2010 by Micheal Hickerson Leave a Comment

Superheroes

In the current issue of Christianity Today, Ted Olsen writes: Rice University sociologist D. Michael Lindsay says that of the evangelicals in cultural leadership he has studied, most notably for his 2007 book Faith in the Halls of Power, 39 percent named [William] Wilberforce, C. S. Lewis, or both men as their personal hero or icon. I'll admit —I don't put much stock in personal heroes. Not because of their personal failings, though —Olsen's article looks at revelations from Stephen Tomkin's new book The Clapham Sect … [Read more...] about Who Are Your Heroes?

Stature of Constantine

We're introducing a new occasional contributor and feature on the  Emerging Scholars Blog today. Nick Liao, Academic Sales and Marketing Manager for  InterVarsity Press, will join us periodically to spotlight new titles from IVP that may be of interest to emerging scholars. If you like this, you may also be interested in a new bibliography, Campus Resources from IVP, that Nick, Tom, and I created to draw attention to IVP titles related to concerns of graduate students and faculty. I also recommend signing up for IVP … [Read more...] about Coming Soon from InterVarsity Press: Constantine, Science, Business, and More
