It’s been an amazing year for the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN). And we’re standing at a crossroads. Thanks to God’s generous work, we’re ready to connect Christian scholars in the following ways this year, if God provides the financial resources to move forward: [Read more…] about Partner with ESN

Support ESN At Year End
This year, the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) launched Scholar’s Compass, introduced Christian scholars to peers across continents, and supported ESN Local pilot events in Boston and Central Pennsylvania.
We reflect on the imagery of growth this Advent, thinking about passages like Isaiah 41: 19–20 (ESV):
I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive. I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together, that they may see and know, may consider and understand together, that the hand of the Lord has done this, the Holy One of Israel has created it.
Through God’s grace and your participation, ESN has grown and is ready to take the next steps, with plans to build a collaboratively written resource on the Theology of Higher Education, launch ESN Local events in more places, and support ESN members through online conversation opportunities. An invitation to support ESN at year end . . .
The Emerging Scholars Network provides encouragement, vision, and connections that are vital to Christian students and faculty. In isolation, we wither; in community, we flourish. — David A. Vosburg, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College
As we continue to await the coming of the Christ-child in these hopeful days of Advent, we are reminded of our call towards generosity in this season of gifts. InterVarsity’s Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) could not exist without the generous efforts of its members and donors. If you have found yourself encouraged, challenged, and closer to Christ through the labors of ESN this year, please consider contributing an end-of-the-year gift today! [1]
Day by Day by His grace,
Thomas B. Grosh IV, Associate Director, Emerging Scholars Network

Will You Partner with ESN?
This year has been a time of transition for the Emerging Scholars Network, and one more transition — the end of our fiscal year — is approaching soon. InterVarsity’s fiscal year wraps up at the end of this month, and we’d like you to consider partnering with ESN with a financial contribution between now and June 30.
As you probably know, ESN encourages and equips the next generation of Christian scholars. How do we do this?
- Mentoring: We help connect younger scholars with those who have gone before them. We also spread the word about resources to help Christian scholars mentor and be mentored, such as the mentoring guide created by Lisa at Johns Hopkins.
- Building networks of Christian scholars:Â Whether online through our Facebook Page or in person at gatherings like our Ohio State luncheons and the Christian Scholar Series, we facilitate relationships between Christian scholars. We have found that, in many cases, Christian students and faculty members feel alone and isolated on campus. We want them to know that there are many fellow believers in their discipline and on their campus. (BTW, we hope that Urbana12 will be another networking opportunity. Have you applied for a $100 ESN scholarship?)
- Equipping ESN members with the best resources we can find: Career advice, thoughts on integrating faith with academic disciplines, questions about how Christian academics can engage with the church — as important as these topics are, we know that grad students and faculty simply don’t have time to investigate everything that’s out there. So Tom and I try to find the best resources, with help from our colleagues and other ESN members. Some of our popular articles here on the ESN Blog have come from faculty and postdocs who have connected with ESN during their academic journey.
None of this would be possible without the support of ESN’s donors and prayer partners. To help us in the fiscal year on a strong note, would you consider donating to ESN? Â If you have been helped in some way by ESN, or know someone who has, we hope that you’ll consider a contribution, so that we may help others. Thank you!
Would You Support ESN With An End-of-the-Year Gift?
If you’re an official member of the Emerging Scholars Network, then you’ve received my recent end-of-the-year emails. (If you aren’t an ESN member, then why not join right now?) These updates share the good news of ESN’s recent activities and invite ESN members to contribute to ESN. Last week, I reported the great work going on here at the Emerging Scholars Blog, which you, of course, already know about! Today, I reported on the ministry that my co-blogger Tom Grosh leads in South Central Pennsylvania. So you too can know about Tom’s work, and have an opportunity of your own to support ESN, I’ve re-published the email below. Enjoy!
Thank you for your membership in the Emerging Scholars Network. There are now 3,800 students, faculty, and other members who share our vision to encourage and equip the next generation of Christian scholars. Praise God!
Last week, I updated you about some of the great things happening on the Emerging Scholars Blog. ESN has also been advancing through regional events and on local campuses. InterVarsity campus staff member Thomas B. Grosh IV has made ESN a core part of his ministry in South Central Pennsylvania.
South Central Pennsylvania Christian Scholar Series
Tom serves several campuses in South Central Pennsylvania, and his passion for emerging scholars is evident through his weekly posts for the Emerging Scholars Blog. To serve the students and faculty near him, Tom has partnered with Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, Elizabethtown Public Library, and Hearts & Minds Books to create the Christian Scholar Series. Several times a year, the series invites a Christian professor or author to speak to the church, local colleges, and the wider community.
