The Kingdom: Poems for Ordinary Time
By Hannah Eagleson
I. Sparrows
Darting, shy,
They seem doubtful –
Have I really put this thistle out for them,
Or am I hoping for something
More exotic –
A goldfinch or an oriole,
Perhaps?
Maybe I would prefer the louder bluejay,
With its panoply
Of colors,
Its assertive tone.
Or the striking cardinal,
That splash of red
Which everyone admires.
They do not realize that I see
The delicate architecture of their wings,
Wrought with patterns
More lavish than they know.
