Flourishing: Why We Need Religion in a Globalized World, Miroslav Volf. New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 2015. Summary: Volf argues that the twin globalizing forces of international economics and world religions, problematic as they may be, may  also be the source of rich and holistic flourishing for the human community. … [Read more...] about Book Review: Flourishing, by Miroslav Volf

What Shall We Remember?

December 27, 2013 by David Leave a Comment

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to take my girlfriend for a date through the Pulitzer Prize photography exhibition  in Philadelphia. She is much more artistically-minded than I and we had talked before about visiting a gallery or museum sometime. I love photography and thought that the exhibit would be a classy and apt hybrid between our interests. What I had forgotten was that the Pulitzer Prize is awarded for photojournalism, which meant that though each shot was notable for composition and … [Read more...] about What Shall We Remember?

Book Review: Allah: A Christian Response

December 24, 2013 by Bob Trube 2 Comments

A number of years ago a student asked me, "Do Muslims and Christians worship the same God?" That is a question that has lingered with me over the years and so I turned with interest to this book in which Miroslav Volf explores the same question and the implications of how we answer it. An important thing to understand about this book is that it is not written in the vein of the "all religions are pointing to the same truth" or that Christianity and Islam are different paths leading to salvation. What Volf, who would … [Read more...] about Book Review: Allah: A Christian Response

Book Review: A Public Faith

October 22, 2013 by Bob Trube Leave a Comment

Miroslav Volf  (Henry B. Wright Professor of Systematic Theology / Founding Director, Yale Center for Faith & Culture)*  believes it is possible to be unapologetically Christian, or otherwise religious, in a pluralistic world without resorting to violence or, alternatively, isolating yourself into a cultural ghetto. In A Public Faith: How Followers of Christ Should Serve the Common Good  (Baker, 2011), he argues that Christians can choose a third way of seeking the public good while remaining faithful to the core … [Read more...] about Book Review: A Public Faith

Book Review: Exclusion & Embrace

September 17, 2013 by Bob Trube Leave a Comment

How do we engage the rich diversity of campus life as 'groups' come together and engage the 'outsider' in the new term? Miroslav Volf's  Exclusion & Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness, and Reconciliation  (Abingdon Press,  1996) has some material to offer.  Read. Review.  Share. Note to all our readers: As I have done previously, I encourage you to read a book before you comment upon it :) It's my intention that reviews such as those offered by Bob will not only provide opportunity for … [Read more...] about Book Review: Exclusion & Embrace
