Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible Part 1

November 24, 2013 by Tom Grosh IV Leave a Comment

In follow-up to Who Am I? Preface Click here for  Who Am I? Dietrich Bonhoeffer as a Historical Mentor in Prayer: Part 1  and here for Part 2 (focused upon Bonhoeffer's historical context). As you consider the relationship of Bonhoeffer's theology to a life of prayer, I encourage you to reflect upon and discuss with others: how prayer guides your daily life and those who lead your religious community/communities. what it means that Jesus the Christ is the Lord of your head, heart, and hands in all aspects of life. Take particular note of … [Read more...] about Who Am I? Bonhoeffer as a Historical Mentor in Prayer: Part 3

Book Review: Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

November 5, 2013 by Bob Trube 4 Comments

Eric Metaxas' Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy  (Thomas Nelson,  2011)  is a long biography not easily summarized in a few paragraphs. What I will do instead is mention some of my takeaways. 1. What a marvelous and unusual thing to see someone from an elite home who couples all the culture, education, and family resources with a deep and vital Christian faith. 2. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's (1906 – 1945) visit to the United States in the 1930s was eye-opening in its portrayal of the vacuousness of liberalism. … [Read more...] about Book Review: Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

November 3, 2013 by Tom Grosh IV 1 Comment

Preface In the process of completing the  Christian Devotional Classics  series, I was inspired to dig  into material which I wrote on the prayer life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer for  Theology and Practice of Prayer[footnote]SF/ST 777: Theology and Practice of Prayer.  Laurie Mellinger, Ph.D. Evangelical Seminary. Summer 2012.  Course Description: This course explores various aspects of the interplay between theology and prayer.
