Jim Sire addresses: “Is there still a place for propositional logic in apologetics or worldview studies?”

The Universe Next Door cover

Last week, the Emerging Scholars Network began a James W. Sire Worldview Question-and-Answer series with Is Atheism a Worldview? As I have considered the development of Sire's thought on worldview, I continue to be struck by the importance of life story, see  Jim Sire: Excerpt from "Rim of the Sandhills". Question 2: "Is there still a place for propositional logic in apologetics or worldview studies?"  -- John James W. Sire's response: "Of course, there is. Postmodernism, however you define it, is filled with … [Read more...] about Jim Sire addresses: “Is there still a place for propositional logic in apologetics or worldview studies?”

Rim of the Sandhills

Yesterday, the Emerging Scholars Network kicked off a  Worldview Question-and-Answer series withJames W. Sire.*  As I have considered the development of Sire's thought on worldview, I have come to even more deeply embrace the importance of how one's life story is understood in the context of God's Story, such as what Sire shares in his newly e-published memoir Rim of the Sandhills (2012). In Chapter 3, he writes: My imagination did not need to be the source of other experiences of the holy. Once Marjorie and I came … [Read more...] about Jim Sire: Excerpt from “Rim of the Sandhills”

James W. Sire

I've had the privilege of knowing James W. Sire, Ph.D., since my college days. Sire served as a senior editor at InterVarsity Press and authored a number of books published by InterVarsity Press including  The Universe Next Door: A Basic Worldview Catalog,  Habits of the Mind: Intellectual Life as a Christian Calling,  Learning to Pray Through the Psalms, and Naming the Elephant: Worldview as a Concept. Our paths crossed several times during my years as a student at Grove City College. I heard him speak not only at … [Read more...] about Jim Sire Addresses: Is Atheism a Worldview?

What’s the Point of Christianity?

January 27, 2011 by Micheal Hickerson 4 Comments

[Ed. note: Tom has a very busy week, so Mike is filling in with a second post.] Last Friday, the Chronicle Review published an article by Stephen T. Asma called "The New Atheists' Narrow Worldview" (subscription probably required). The title intrigued me greatly, though the article itself was not quite what I expected. Asma argues that the New Atheists (Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, et al.) focus too much on arguments against Christianity and fail to engage non-Western religions, especially animism. That's probably true. … [Read more...] about What’s the Point of Christianity?

Swann in Snow

What are you reading, watching, thinking about this week? As usual, here's a few which have been on our mind. Let us know your thoughts on any/all of them. If you have items you'd like us to consider for the top five, add them in the comments or send them to Tom or Mike. Photo Credit: Philadelphia's Swann Memorial Fountain, blizzard-style, from Eddie Hales via Flickr. Click for a larger image. 1. Is there a place in the academy for the Christian worldview?
