Daniel: Notes for Bible Study Groups, Part 1

September 11, 2016 by Kathy Cooper 1 Comment

Drawing from her own study of Daniel, the knowledge gained while serving as a teaching assistant  for Prof. Iain Provan's Regent College course on Daniel, and the insights gained through talks Carl Ellis gave at an InterVarsity conference, Kathy Cooper has compiled study notes for InterVarsity groups exploring Daniel. These notes are designed to be "plug and play." While we'll make some further study suggestions for those with extra time, these notes are designed to  provide  the basis for  leading  a thoughtful … [Read more...] about Daniel: Notes for Bible Study Groups, Part 1

Book Review: Apologetics Beyond Reason

March 14, 2015 by Bob Trube 2 Comments

Apologetics Beyond Reason: Why Seeing Really Is Believing By James W. Sire My rating: 4 of 5 stars There is everything. Therefore there is a God. Either you see this or you don't. This epigraph at the beginning of James W. Sire's latest book captures  the “apologetic” for the Christian faith that Sire proposes. In the course of the book, he rings the changes on this syllogism, substituting for “everything” the terms “literature” and “the music of Johann Sebastian Bach” among others. What he addresses … [Read more...] about Book Review: Apologetics Beyond Reason

Scholar’s Compass: Sharing the Wonder

March 8, 2015 by Ruth Bancewicz Leave a Comment

Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them. - Ps 111:2 (NIV) Reflection Psalm 111 has been called the ‘research scientist's Psalm' for reasons that are hopefully obvious. Scientists have the privilege of being paid to ponder God's creative works every day. In fact, their pondering can become so intense that their field of study might focus in on a single detail. … [Read more...] about Scholar’s Compass: Sharing the Wonder

Science in Review: I Think I Can, I Think I Can’t

October 29, 2014 by Andy Walsh Leave a Comment

Photo of early steam locomotive

"The Little Engine That Could" is a popular children's tale, clearly intended to impart a lesson about the power of positive thinking. Through self-encouragement, a small locomotive is able to pull a train up a tall, steep mountain he originally believed to be insurmountable. If you just believe hard enough, kids, you can do anything! The physics of the story may be a bit dubious, although it is plausible that the work required to haul that train up that track is near the rated limits of the locomotive, allowing for … [Read more...] about Science in Review: I Think I Can, I Think I Can’t
