The periodic table turned 150 earlier this year, or at least March 1 was the 150th anniversary of the publication of Dmitri Mendeleev’s version. Chemists had organized the elements in a tabular fashion previously, and some features (like interactivity!) of contemporary representations would be added later. Still, Mendeleev’s published version was a significant milestone, since he recognized regularities within properties of the elements which suggested some elements with specific features were undiscovered. Even better for his legacy, his predictions held true. Now, a century and a half later, a computer program has relearned what Mendeleev and his contemporaries knew and made some predictions of its own.

Christians in Chemistry Meetup: August 26 (ACS San Diego Meeting)
In our goal of connecting Christian academics to the communities they need, we often publicize meetups of Christians at various conferences. The informal group “Christians in Chemistry” has an upcoming meeting at the ACS San Diego National Meeting August 26, and they asked us to share the information with ESN readers. If you are organizing a meetup of Christians at a conference, email us at ESN. We would love to publicize it, circumstances permitting. (Image: San Diego Convention Center)
Plans are well underway for the next gathering of our very informal group “Christians in Chemistry.†There were about 50 present for the last such ACS meeting in Orlando. At the ACS San Diego National Meeting, Lord willing, we will gather at 5:30 PM on August 26 for a one hour time of sharing. The location will be the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina and room details to be announced soon. By no means required, but some of the folks attending will go out for dinner at an inexpensive nearby restaurant. Suggestions welcome.
Two distinguished speakers will share for about 20 minutes each. The first is Robert Gilliard, gifted synthetic inorganic chemist and Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Our second person sharing will be a distinguished theoretical chemist, Professor Peter Gill, of the University of Sydney, Australia. Please share with chemists who will be attending the ACS San Diego Meeting. Undergraduate and graduate students are warmly welcomed!
Any questions, please email Fritz Schaefer at ccq[at]uga.edu.
April 1: Christians in Chemistry Meetup at ACS in Orlando
ESN often publicizes informal get togethers of Christians at various academic conferences. Today we share an announcement from Dr. Fritz Schaefer for those attending the American Chemical Society conference in Orlando.
Christians in Chemistry will gather again informally at the semi-annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, in Orlando, Florida. As in the past, we will meet for one hour on the Monday evening at 5:30 PM. Although this is not an April Fools Joke, the date of our meeting is April 1, 2019. Announcement of the exact room in the Convention Center will follow. All chemists at the ACS meeting are invited, including undergraduate and graduate students. I am delighted to report that two distinguished chemists have agreed to share for 20 minutes each. James (“Jimâ€) Tour from Rice University and Thomas (“Tomâ€) Rizzo from EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland will share. After our hour together, as many who are free are invited to join for an even more informal dinner, location to be determined if anyone has suggestions. -Fritz Schaefer
Note: If you would like to be contacted with further details or have questions, please email ESN here so we can forward your interest or question to the organizer.Â

Interview with 2017 Christian Scholars Foundation Grant Awardee Jill Ellenbarger
Dr. Jill Ellenbarger is one of the two scholars who received a 2017 Christian Scholars Foundation Grant, given to ESN members who are junior faculty. In this interview, she talks about her research, how the CSF grant is supporting her work, and how her faith and her scholarly vocation fit together. Earlier we interviewed Eleanor McGlinchey, PhD, the other 2017 awardee. Click here to learn more about the 2018 CSF Grant and apply by March 15, 2018.
