December 10, 2017 by Joy Moore Leave a Comment

Scripture Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence— as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at your presence!  —Isaiah 64:1-2 (ESV) … [Read more...] about Second Week of Advent: The Hope (Scholar’s Compass)

First Week of Advent: The Word (Scholar’s Compass)

December 3, 2017 by Joy Moore Leave a Comment

Scripture Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly. Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land. -   Psalm 85:8-9 (ESV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In addition, Nan was part of the founding team that imagined the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) and made it a reality. We're grateful for her ongoing advice and encouragement, and for this Advent … [Read more...] about Rejoice: Fourth Week of Advent (Scholar’s Compass)

Science Corner: All Signs Point to Nihonium

December 7, 2016 by Andy Walsh 2 Comments

There are now 118 named elements on the periodic table. The latest additions made big news last week. Elements 113, 115, 116 and 117 are now named nihonium, moscovium, tennessine and oganesson respectively. The actual event triggering the headlines wasn't what you'd traditionally picture as science however. It wasn't the actual discovery or synthesis of these elements; that happened years ago. It wasn't even the selection of the names which was announced back in June. It was simply the completion of the bureaucratic … [Read more...] about Science Corner: All Signs Point to Nihonium
