Theology & Podcast Launches Today!

The Emerging Scholars Network is delighted to announce the launch today of a new podcast, Theology &. Many of our members have expressed interest in more theologically grounded conversations about faith and issues in our fields of study. We are delighted to co-sponsor this new effort toward that end.

Does academic research make a difference in the real world? Can faith and theology inform our research in other academic disciplines? Theology & is a new podcast that hosts conversations at the intersection of theology, the academy, and culture to discuss just these questions. Join co-hosts Rev. Dr. Jeff Liou and Dr. Emily Hill for conversations that bring research to life, explore why we love what we study, and how it hits the ground in tangible ways. Each episode features discussions with theologians and academics from different disciplines discussing their life, faith, research, and how we can engage them around important issues in our culture today. In the pilot season we’ll discuss topics like public discourse, political engagement, race and the church, race and education, and disability through the lenses of theology and law, politics, sociology, education, and bioethics. The first several episodes feature Dr. Kristen Deede Johnson & Dr. John Inazu on public discourse, Dr. Ned O’Gorman and Dr. Vincent Lloyd on political engagement and Korie Little Edwards and Soong-Chan Rah on Race and the Church.

You can listen to the subscribe to the podcast on Apple & Spotify, or via RSS on other apps, and follow along on social media via Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.

Science Corner: The Sounds of Science

If you’ve got some open road ahead of you, fill it with some of these podcasts! (Image by Ryan McGuire from Pixabay)

For many, this has not been the summer they may have expected or hoped for back in the winter or spring. Still, some of you may have a chance to get away from your normal routines, or maybe you’ll need to take a trip to bring students to college in the fall. Or maybe you have or soon will be resuming a commute that has been interrupted. In any event, I thought you might appreciate some of these podcasts and other listening options that deal either with science and faith, or with science topics that come up often in faith communities. Happy listening!

Science Corner: Science & Religion Round Up

Elementary school may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about science ed or science & religion, but Ian Binns thinks about how to do both well in the early grades. (Photo by coyot)

My schedule is a little unusual this week, so this post will be brief. I did want to share with you a podcast I heard recently with Ian Binns. He was the guest on Social Science Hour (previously Science Social Hour), a program that had me on previously as well. Ian Binns is a science educator who currently focuses on training elementary school teachers to be better equipped as science teachers. Over the course of the interview, Binns also shares some about his own faith journey and his interest in helping folks navigate science and religion together. I really appreciated his perspective as an educator and I thought you might as well.

Science Corner: When Holidays Are Complex

Some listening suggestions for your holiday travels. Also, traffic patterns are a topic in complexity science. (Photo by jonbgem )

Traveling for Thanksgiving? Need something to listen to? Allow me to suggest some podcasts that may provide both topics to discuss around the table on Thursday and some tips on how to approach those conversations. I hope that all of you who are celebrating have the opportunity to spend the day with loved ones in a mutually supportive environment, but I appreciate not everyone may have such an opportunity. Perhaps somewhere in the conversations below you will find some encouragement for cultivating better dialogues in your context.

Repentance and Lent

More Downtown Tulips
Sometimes, though, it can be hard to think of repentance when the tulips are starting to bloom.

As a fairly young Christian I thought of repentance for my sins in terms of being sorry for things I had done. I was really, sincerely sorry, yet kept doing the same things over and over again. You may have been there yourself. Then I heard a wise teacher say, “Repentance is not being sorry for the things you have done, but being sorry you are the kind of person that does such things.” – M. Robert Mulholland, Jr., The Deeper Journey: The Spirituality of Discovering Your True Self, p. 23

This morning, I listened to my friend and former Faculty Ministry colleague Kenny Benge preach a sermon on “Ancient-Future Worship” during Lent. (See Robert Webber’s book for more about the idea of “Ancient-Future Worship.”) It truly was an Ancient-Future experience, because I listened to him via podcast from his church’s website. During his sermon, Kenny drew a contrast between morality and moralism, which I think was taken from C. S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity. Morality is the law of right and wrong that is woven into the fabric of the universe. Meanwhile, moralism is our futile attempt to control our lives (and the lives of others) in order to become “so good” that we no longer need the cross of Christ.
