Most Pressing Science & Faith Question

Science Corner: Immunization is a Team Sport

The Most Pressing Science & Faith Question tournament has reached the final round; scroll down or click here to vote between now and midnight EDT on Sunday (April 11). We’re going to take a break from answering these questions while I line up other folks to offer their perspectives. This week, I’d like to address some omissions from the bracket. Arguably, the most pressing science & faith questions of the moment have to do with religiously motivated COVID-19 vaccine refusal. I left out pandemic topics in part because I wanted this series to provide some respite from them and in part because their urgency is only temporary. Still, public health remains my vocation and so my thoughts never stray too far from SARS-CoV-2. That also means I am extra motivated to do what I can to bring about a time when I can put my focus elsewhere.

Science Corner: Most Pressing Science & Faith Question Round 3 Results

The last quartet of questions, one from each topic “region,” have been chosen in the Most Pressing Science & Faith Question tournament. After my attempt at seeding the questions turned out to have little connection to your preferences, you guys proved me clueless once more by making the showdown I expected to be neck-and-neck the only one to be decided unanimously! The remaining four are guaranteed at least one post all to themselves and my best effort to get input from other knowledgeable parties. (If there’s someone you’d like to address one of them, let me know in the comments and I’ll see what I can do.) So while the voting will continue for two more rounds, this is the last week for a quickfire round-up of answers to departed questions. Click here for a larger scale bracket if the embedded poll below is not convenient. Voting is open until midnight EDT on Sunday (April 4).

Science Corner: Most Pressing Science & Faith Question Round 2 Results

We’ve reached the midpoint of the Most Pressing Science & Faith Question tournament, possibly the only tournament with more “upsets” than the actual basketball one. The top vote-getters in this round will make the final four and get expanded discussion. So cast your votes to make sure your curiosities are not relegated to a handful of sentences next week. Click here for a larger scale bracket if the embedded poll below is not convenient. Voting is open until midnight EDT on Sunday (March 28). Once again we had some very close decisions, so you could cast the crucial vote. I’m especially curious to see how the AI vs ET showdown turns out.

Last week we kicked off a tournament for the Most Pressing Science & Faith Question. The round 1 votes are in, and the polls are now open for round 2; use that link if the embedded poll below is not convenient. As before, voting is open until midnight EDT on Sunday (March 21). There were several very close decisions, and a couple even ended in a tie decided by a coin flip. So your votes matter!

Science Corner: You’ve Got Questions. We’ve Got Brackets.

I leaned into the question theme too hard with this image and it fell over. (Photo by ed_needs_a_bicycle )

In a quest to discover if there’s anything you can’t put in a single-elimination bracket, the Emerging Scholars Network presents the Most Pressing Science & Faith Question tournament! Over the next few weeks, you will have the chance to vote in match-ups between questions related in some way to the science & faith conversation. You don’t have to answer the questions, just pick the ones you want to have answered out of each pair. When the dust settles and the votes have been tallied, the victorious query will be celebrated with a definitive answer in 1,000 words or less. OK, not a definitive answer, but definitely some musings. We’ll give some detailed attention to the rest of the final four as well. As the rest are eliminated, I’ll attempt some quick takes. Got it? Click here to go to the poll or use the embedded version below.
