Finding Mentors as an Undergraduate

June 7, 2012 by Hannah Eagleson 2 Comments

Everyone agrees that mentoring is important at every phase of an academic career, but finding mentors and growing in mentoring relationships can be a challenge. In follow-up to and to expand upon Resource for Grad Student mentoring of Undergraduates (5/29/2012). I'll be doing a series on finding and growing in mentoring relationships as an undergraduate and grad student. I'd welcome comments and stories. Later in the series I'll give a few thoughts on finding mentors as a graduate student, maintaining and growing in … [Read more...] about Finding Mentors as an Undergraduate

2012 JHU Lunch

In a recent visit to Baltimore, I ate lunch with a group of Johns Hopkins University (JHU) graduate students. Dwight Schwartz (InterVarsity's Graduate & Faculty Ministry Area Director for the MidAtlantic and Campus Staff Member at JHU) couldn't wait to introduce me to Lisa, whose labors align so well with the passions and vision of the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN). As a first year graduate student, Lisa organized a  mentoring program in which graduate students serve as mentors for undergraduate students. What … [Read more...] about Resource for Grad Student mentoring of Undergraduates

Who Are Your Heroes?

Lewis, or both men as their personal hero or icon. I'll admit —I don't put much stock in personal heroes. Not because of their personal failings, though —Olsen's article looks at revelations from Stephen Tomkin's new book The Clapham Sect … [Read more...] about Who Are Your Heroes?

January 8, 2010 by Micheal Hickerson Leave a Comment

Urbana09 Main Session

Tom and I have been busy recuperating from our week at Urbana 09, so there won't be any Week in Review this week. Instead, we're each going to share some highlights of our experience. If you were there, we hope that we were able to make contact. If you weren't there, you can watch videos of many of the speakers and other main session performers at the Urbana website. So, what did the Emerging Scholars Network do at Urbana 09? Serving Christ as a Professor: More than 250 students —mostly undergraduates —attended my … [Read more...] about LAST Week in Review: ESN at Urbana 09

Week in Review: Numbers Edition

September 11, 2009 by Micheal Hickerson Leave a Comment

Our Week-in-Review feature has returned, with a new format.  We know there's way too much to read out there already, so we're going to be highlighting the top five articles, books, websites, etc., that we've been reading or thinking about the past week.  If you have items you'd like us to consider for the top five, add them in the comments or send them to Tom or Mike. Welcome to Your Quarterlife Crisis - Kevin Offner, who works with InterVarsity Graduate and Faculty Ministries in Washington, DC, tipped us off to … [Read more...] about Week in Review: Numbers Edition
