March 5, 2015 by Lauri Swann Leave a Comment

Scholar’s Compass: God Was the First To Cry, Part 1

March 3, 2015 by Lauri Swann 1 Comment

In this two part series, Lauri Swann reflects on Navigating Justice for the  Scholar's Compass Lent series.   “God was the first to cry.” – Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma Reflection In the movie Selma, Martin Luther King, Jr. is seen consoling Mr. Cager Lee, an 82 year old man, who is in the morgue identifying the body of his grandson, Jimmy Lee Jackson. February 19, 2015 by Mary Poplin 2 Comments

During Lent, ESN will be publishing a series of posts on navigating issues of justice as Christians in academic life. This pursuit takes a variety of shapes, and we'll be sharing the words  of academics from a wide range of disciplinary commitments and personal experiences. Scholar  Mary Poplin starts off the series.   God does not call everyone to work with the poor, like He called us. And God does not call everyone to live among the poor or to live like the poor, like He has called us. But God does call everyone to … [Read more...] about Justice and Righteousness are the Foundations of His Throne (Scholar’s Compass)

Prayers for Chapel Hill

February 16, 2015 by Hank Tarlton Leave a Comment

Last Tuesday afternoon, reports began to emerge of a shooting in the Finley Forest condominiums in Chapel Hill. I immediately thought of the several graduate students in the graduate IVCF chapter who live there and called one to check on their safety. They were just returning home from class and were greeted by parked police cars surrounding one of the condos. That was the first they had heard of the shooting which happened less than an hour before. It was only the previous Friday that our graduate InterVarsity … [Read more...] about Prayers for Chapel Hill

Image: Christ on Gethsemane, Jesus MAFA Isaiah 61:1-3b, 8 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2  to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3  and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of … [Read more...] about Finding Light in the Darkness: Reflections on Recent Decisions in Missouri and New York
