Dear (No Longer) New Graduate Student

April 18, 2016 by Monica Greenwood 1 Comment

Dear (No Longer) New Graduate Student, I pray that you've seen Jesus show up in the ways we knew He would since I last wrote. I wish I could hear in detail all the ways He's surprised you, the times He's stood by you and refused to leave you alone in the library, lab, office, and/or classroom when you wanted to give up. … [Read more...] about Dear (No Longer) New Graduate Student

He declared to Arioch, the king's captain, “Why is the decree of the king so urgent?” Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel. And Daniel went in and requested the king to appoint him a time, that he might show the interpretation to the king. Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, and told them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of … [Read more...] about Pilgrimage: Communitas in the Academy (Scholar’s Compass)

Pilgrimage: Liminality in the Academy (Scholar’s Compass)

Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king's palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of … [Read more...] about Pilgrimage: Liminality in the Academy (Scholar’s Compass)

A Biblical Basis for Secular Knowledge (Scholar’s Compass)

April 9, 2015 by Mark Hansard 2 Comments

Reading Daniel 1 Reflection In an evangelical world in which “secular” knowledge is sometimes not valued, it's important to remember that the Bible itself, at least in a couple of instances, supports the learning and use of what's sometimes termed “secular” knowledge. Of course, there is no such thing as “secular” knowledge, really. There is simply knowledge, and God has all of the knowledge it's possible to have, including the “secular” and “sacred” kind. So, we really shouldn't have to defend the use of “secular” … [Read more...] about A Biblical Basis for Secular Knowledge (Scholar’s Compass)

Scholar’s Compass Unchartered Territories: Hearing God’s Voice

September 28, 2014 by Lauri Swann Leave a Comment

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you. . . . so Abram went, as the Lord had told him. - Genesis 12:1,4a (NIV) Reflection Just reading the above scripture makes me wonder if Abram was a supernatural being or a superhero. The Lord said, so Abram went. The Lord said to leave everything of comfort and familiarity and go to a new place unexplored. Abram heard God and he went. No fuss, no fight, no fear. If it was me, in my human frailty, the … [Read more...] about Scholar’s Compass Unchartered Territories: Hearing God’s Voice
