My Calling at Church (Liturgies of Calling, Post 4)

October 11, 2015 by Mike Gehrling Leave a Comment

Now  and then, we'll take a break from our Sunday Scholar's Compass rhythm to share other material that can be used in personal reflection and communal worship, and this week we conclude  a series of  liturgies from a recent InterVarsity conference. Every summer, InterVarsity hosts  the  Midwest Faculty Conference  as a time for faculty to rest, reflect, and meet with God and each other. This year's theme was The Faculty Vocation: Exploring a Christian Anthropology of the Academic Life. Mike Gehrling,  InterVarsity's … [Read more...] about My Calling at Church (Liturgies of Calling, Post 4)

Learning from our Brothers and Sisters after Charleston

June 26, 2015 by Robert Howe Leave a Comment

The shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston is heavy on my heart because 10 years ago I, too, stepped into an AME church as a young white man. I didn't know anyone there and was anxious about how I would be perceived. But the pastors and members showed me hospitality that forever changed my life. I went on to become a member of the AME Church and learn from its rich heritage of faith in Jesus in the face of suffering and injustice. I joined the choir, attended prayer meetings and Bible … [Read more...] about Learning from our Brothers and Sisters after Charleston

How Can the Church Care for Academics? (Scholar’s Compass)

April 30, 2015 by Hannah Eagleson 2 Comments

For the body does not consist of one member but of many.  If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.  And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.  If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?  But as it is,  God arranged the members in the body, each one … [Read more...] about How Can the Church Care for Academics? Scholar’s Compass: Sir Gawain Seeks Christmas

December 23, 2014 by David Russell Mosley Leave a Comment

David Russell Mosley delves into  Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,  a poem that starts at Christmas.  Mosley draws  on an argument by Tolkien, not coincidentally one of the translators of    Sir Gawain,  that fairy tales and mythical figures point beyond themselves to the truth of the Gospel.  David will share more about Faerie and the Gospel in future Scholar's Compass posts. Reading Quotations from  Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in this post. … [Read more...] about Scholar’s Compass: Sir Gawain Seeks Christmas
