The Best Christian Book of All Time: One Year Later

February 13, 2014 by Micheal Hickerson 4 Comments

About a year ago, we announced our call for nominations for the Best Christian Book of All Time, and you —our readers —responded with great enthusiasm. From a nomination pool of over 140 worthies, we first narrowed the bracket to 64 contenders, voted out lesser lights (such as Luther, Calvin, Chesterton, Aquinas —I hope they make something of themselves some day!), and crowned our winner: Augustine's Confessions, the Best Christian Book of All Time.[1] You may have heard of the runner-up, a short tract by C.S. Lewis … [Read more...] about The Best Christian Book of All Time: One Year Later

Review of Alister McGrath, C.S. Lewis — A Life. Part II

Review of Alister McGrath, C.S. Lewis -- A Life: Eccentric Genius, Reluctant Prophet  (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House, 2013) for the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN). Part II. Click here for Part I. Things which I felt did not work: Moving on to things that I found difficult about the work, I think the biggest thing was that the writing style was confusing to me. At times, McGrath seemed to fall into the awkward habit in his writing style of announcing his transitions in a way that seemed unnecessary. For … [Read more...] about Review of Alister McGrath, C.S. Review of Alister McGrath, C.S. Lewis -- A Life: Eccentric Genius, Reluctant Prophet  (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House, 2013) for the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN). Part I. Click here for Part II. Alister McGrath is, like many of us, a fan of C.S. Lewis who never had the opportunity to study under or even met him. Although McGrath probably shares more similarities with Lewis than you or I, as someone raised in the same part of Ireland as Lewis and educated in Oxford, he thinks this distance will allow him the … [Read more...] about Review of Alister McGrath, C.S. C.S. Lewis on Scripture. God’s Word in Human Words. Part 2 of 2

C.S. Lewis' desk and chair

In my last post I highlighted C.S. Lewis's take on what it means to approach the Bible humbly: namely, we should first ask honestly and with an open mind,  What sort of book  has God actually given us and  how  has He given it? When we do that, we find that God has given us a Book not at all like what we might have expected if we had formulated a doctrine of Scripture  a priori. Instead He has given us something else entirely, something far more extraordinary: The same divine humility which decreed that God should … [Read more...] about C.S. Lewis on Scripture. C.S. Lewis on Scripture. God’s Word in Human Words. Part 1 of 2

August 30, 2013 by David Williams 5 Comments

I am always thankful that the first theology book I ever read was C.S. Lewis's  Mere Christianity. I stumbled upon it in the B. Dalton Bookseller at the local mall early in the summer before my senior year in high school, was intrigued, took it home and devoured it in less than a day. From then on I read anything I could get my hands on by Lewis:  Miracles,  The Great Divorce,  God in the Dock: Essays on Theology and Ethics,  The Abolition of Man, you name it. Lewis's clarity, cleverness, creativity, intelligence, and … [Read more...] about C.S. Lewis on Scripture. God’s Word in Human Words. Part 1 of 2
