Rejection

July 2, 2013 by Kate Peterson 4 Comments

Note:   This post was written nearly a year ago, but only recently submitted to the blog. I had a new experience recently. I guess I'm a bit behind, since many people have been dealing with this for decades. But it's new to me, and I want to share it with you. For the first time ever, I was refused the opportunity to serve at church in a ministry I feel called to because I'm a woman. I don't normally label myself a feminist. I'm grateful for the opportunities available to me because feminists before me have … [Read more...] about Rejection

Review: The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert

June 25, 2013 by Kate Peterson 7 Comments

Rosaria Champagne Butterfield, The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert (Pittsburgh: Crown & Covenant Publications, 2012). 154 pp. Rosaria Butterfield is the kind of woman she herself once bitterly opposed. The homeschooling pastor's wife and adoptive mother of four was not raised in the Reformed Presbyterian Church. She was a self-described “lesbian postmodernist,” (p. 41) a professor of English and Queer Theory conducting research on the Promise Keepers movement, when she encountered Christian hospitality at … [Read more...] about Review: The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert

Following Jesus in the “Real World”

May 8, 2013 by Kate Peterson 30 Comments

The contributors to  Faithful is Successful, Notes to a Driven Pilgrim  are very much interested in feedback from and interaction with Emerging Scholars. That's why they're sharing their material with a volunteer ESN writer team to review and respond to via an ESN blog series. As you may remember,  Andy Walsh  kicked off the series with  In Response to “The Difficulty Discerning Calling”. Please join the on-going conversation. . . .  ~ Thomas B. Grosh IV, Editor. ------------ I'm having an unexpected emotional … [Read more...] about Following Jesus in the “Real World”

PhD or No PhD. That is the Question.

May 1, 2013 by Kate Peterson 12 Comments

Although Kate's a professor in the Humanities and as such adds to the archive of material addressing  Why Get a PhD in the Humanities?, she also opens up the question to PhD or No PhD?  In response to her excellent post,  I desire to take the  opportunity to extend a call more broadly to faculty across higher education to share their reflections on the topic by leaving a comment/reflection below or by contributing a post of their own. To learn more about posting on the blog, click here. Note: if  you are a student who … [Read more...] about PhD or No PhD. That is the Question.

Success, Failure and the Protestant Work Ethic

March 21, 2013 by Kate Peterson Leave a Comment

Not long ago I wrote an  Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) blog post  about my experiences on the tenure track, sharing my concerns about whether I would get tenure and contemplating my priorities. I wanted to think through whether tenure even should be my primary goal, and what I would give up to achieve it. It was encouraging to me to see that I'm not alone, and that others feel some of the same pressures I do. Thank you to those who commented. Looking back, though, I realized that I made some generalizations that I … [Read more...] about Success, Failure and the Protestant Work Ethic
