New Schedule and a New Way to Follow ESN

September 13, 2010 by Micheal Hickerson Leave a Comment

Today, we're announcing a few changes to the  Emerging Scholars Blog: We're now going to post twice a week, with Mike posting on Tuesdays and Tom posting on Thursdays. For the time being, we're retiring the Friday Week in Review feature. Instead, we'll be sharing links throughout the week on the ESN Facebook page and on our shiny new ESN Twitter account. You heard me right: Twitter. ESN has now entered the 1st quarter of 2010. If you don't have Twitter, don't worry: the links on Facebook and Twitter are going … [Read more...] about New Schedule and a New Way to Follow ESN

Classics for Summer Reading

What are you reading, watching, thinking about this week? As usual, here's a few which have been on our mind. Let us know your thoughts on any/all of them. If you have items you'd like us to consider for the top five, add them in the comments or send them to Tom or Mike. 1. Newly Customized Majors Suit Students With Passions All Their Own (Ilana Kowarski.   Chronicle of Higher Education, 9/9/2010):   Is this what it takes to get creative students to go to Drexel?   Note:   a little dig at my [Tom] friends who are … [Read more...] about Week in Review: Passionate Classics Edition

Mystery & Evidence

September 8, 2010 by Tom Grosh IV 2 Comments

Mystery and Evidence's (Tim Crane. NY Times. 9/5/2010) opening paragraph immediately caught my attention. There is a story about Bertrand Russell giving a public lecture somewhere or other, defending his atheism. A furious woman stood up at the end of the lecture and asked: “And Lord Russell, what will you say when you stand in front of the throne of God on judgment day?” Russell replied: “I will say: ‘I'm terribly sorry, but you didn't give us enough evidence.' ” What do you think of Russell's response? By … [Read more...] about Mystery & Evidence

Feet walking on books

Happy Labor Day! The beginning of the academic year has generated a plethora of "starting off right" articles, for everyone from new undergraduates to new professors. (Count ESN as part of the trend, too, with our Best Advice for Undergrads post.) Here's a quick collection of links about starting off on the right foot. 1. Make College Count by Derek Melleby. Friend of ESN Derek Melleby has a new book coming out for students entering college —Make College Count: A Faithful Guide to Life & Learning. And, of course, … [Read more...] about Week in Review BONUS Edition: Starting Off Right

Week in Review: Where the Jobs Are Edition

September 3, 2010 by Tom Grosh IV Leave a Comment

What are you reading, watching, thinking about this week? As usual, here's a few which have been on our mind. Let us know your thoughts on any/all of them. If you have items you'd like us to consider for the top five, add them in the comments or send them to Tom or Mike. "Where are the jobs" is a hot topic on campus and has a lot of relationship to politics.   Here's a sampler from Tom: 1.   From Where the Jobs Are (and Aren't) [in Poli-Sci] (Scott Jaschik. Inside Higher Education. 9/3/2010): During the … [Read more...] about Week in Review: Where the Jobs Are Edition
