The most popular Emerging Scholars blog post is "Finding a Postdoc in the Sciences: Nailing the Interview." It's part of a larger series on finding a postdoc which is also frequently visited. We figured it was time for a follow-up on what to do once you've found the postdoc you were looking for. … [Read more...] about I Found a Postdoc in the Sciences: Now What? (Pt 2)

I Found a Postdoc in the Sciences: Now What? (Pt 1)

August 8, 2018 by Andy Walsh Leave a Comment

Let's be honest: postdocs occupy a weird, liminal space in the path of the scholar. Is it a job? Are postdocs students? I was once told that my department considered postdocs students when it meant they didn't have to provide faculty benefits, and it considered them special faculty when it meant they could withhold student benefits. We never even really bothered to give postdoctoral fellowships a real name; we basically just call them "that thing you do after you finish your doctorate but before you get a real job." … [Read more...] about I Found a Postdoc in the Sciences: Now What? Reading: Luke 12:22-24 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!” … [Read more...] about Consider the Ravens (Scholar’s Compass)

Leaving Academia, Part 3

August 12, 2017 by Joshua Wu Leave a Comment

In my previous posts, I discussed my exit from the academy and questions to better understand a pivot to a non-academic career. In this third post, I discuss practical strategies as you navigate new job application processes. When I started applying for non-academic jobs, I felt directionless and did not know how to start. Providentially, I stumbled upon the simple realization that I can leverage skills and expertise gained in graduate experience to navigate these new unknowns. By adopting familiar practices of … [Read more...] about Leaving Academia, Part 3

Leaving Academia, Part 2

July 15, 2017 by Joshua Wu Leave a Comment

In my last post, I shared about my unexpected and abrupt exit from an academic career. In this post, I discuss how my examination of two questions helped me pivot to life outside the academy and become thankful for my graduate experience. Now what? As it became clear that I would not have an academic job, I felt lost and overwhelmed. Having given no serious thought to a non-academic career, I wondered if my academic apprenticeship had any value in preparing me for life outside the academy. And I did not know … [Read more...] about Leaving Academia, Part 2
