Advent: Christ in Our Context

December 11, 2014 by Paul Yandle Leave a Comment

“ ‘Come thou now thyself, Sovran of Heaven! bring us salvation, weary thralls oppressed, worn out with weeping, with bitter burning tears. With thee alone resteth their cure for those in direst need. Visit us here, captives so sad of mood, nor leave behind thee, when thou turn'st from hence, so great a throng! But royally show forth thy mercy to us, O Saviour Christ! - Cynewulf's Christ (eighth century) Reflection In the corner of the South where I live, Jesus is contextualized everywhere. … [Read more...] about Advent: Christ in Our Context

Book Review: Jesus The Sage

May 6, 2014 by Bob Trube Leave a Comment

My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:2-3, NIV). A number of years ago, C. S. Lewis framed the Liar, Lunatic, Lord argument that asserted that Jesus could not possibly have been merely a good teacher–either he lied about his own identity which would make him not good, he was deluded … [Read more...] about Book Review: Jesus The Sage

Review: March Madness ’14, Reads, Opportunities . . .

April 4, 2014 by Tom Grosh IV Leave a Comment

ESN March Madness '14 . . . A quick ESN March Madness '14  round between "Finding & keeping vocation" and "Realizing justice in action" followed by a face-off  with "Diversity in higher ed" to see who goes to the finals to take on "Integrating faith & field" surprised me by starting with a tie in my own household. Hmm . . . My wife has stuck to her position that  "Realizing justice in action"  is possibly the "most pressing issue for the Christian to engage when journeying in higher ed". Do you agree? I'll … [Read more...] about Review: March Madness ’14, Reads, Opportunities . . .

Science in Review — September 2013

September 25, 2013 by Andy Walsh Leave a Comment

This is the fifth and final post in a series on the topic of biology and sexual orientation. I set out to write this series primarily as a forcing function to update my own understanding of the evidence for biological mediation of sexual orientation. After reviewing studies on heritability  and the biological pathways, I have satisfied myself that there is a biological dimension to orientation. So now I suppose the question becomes: what does that mean? For starters, let's consider what that means with respect to … [Read more...] about Science in Review — September 2013

Best Christian Books of All Time Reviews: Knowing God, Pt. II

April 25, 2013 by John Hundley 5 Comments

Last week I wrote the first part of what will be a several-part review of J.I. Packer's Knowing God.   This week I'm going to take a look at the remaining chapters of Part I before moving on and moving through a bit of Part II. Knowledge and Idolatry Chapter 3, "Knowing and Being Known," deals more directly with the distinction between knowledge  about  and knowledge  of (which I highlighted in last Thursday's post).  I like to call the former "factual" and the latter "intimate."  Concerning the latter, Packer … [Read more...] about Best Christian Books of All Time Reviews: Knowing God, Pt.
