ASA Annual Meeting 2018

Science Corner: Fruit Flies Like a Banana… And We’re Closer to Knowing Why

July 25, 2018 by Andy Walsh Leave a Comment

With the American Scientific Affiliation meeting coming up this week, I've got connecting on the brain. And now after catching up with the science news, I'm also thinking about the connections in the fruit fly brain. It was announced last week that scientists have taken a series of images of a fruit fly brain with enough detail to see every neuron. Of even greater interest is the ability to see every connection between pairs of neurons. Studying how neurons are "wired up" can provide insight into where specific sensory … [Read more...] about Science Corner: Fruit Flies Like a Banana… And We’re Closer to Knowing Why

Science Corner: Where to find me at the ASA Meeting

We're a little over a week away from the American Scientific Affiliation annual meeting at Gordon College. I'm really excited to meet new friends, put faces to names I've only talked to online, and catch up with some long-time friends as well. If you're reading this and will be at the meeting, I hope I get to see you too. Getting a chance to chat face-to-face is a big reason I'm making the trip to Massachusetts. To make those meetings easier, here is my schedule. And also feel free to come up and say 'hi' at any other … [Read more...] about Science Corner: Where to find me at the ASA Meeting

The Fourth of July in Pittsburgh is a big time for boating, what with the three rivers and all that. So this story about citizen scientists contributing their time at sea to science caught my eye. As Aquaman loves to remind us, the surface of the Earth is over 70% water. Yet nearly all of science is conducted on land, making it challenging to know even basic facts of what is happening out in the ocean. The solution here is to recruit volunteers (no press-ganging for this navy) who already spend significant time on the … [Read more...] about Science Corner: Science, Ho!

July 2, 2018 by Hannah Eagleson Leave a Comment

Francis Collins will be speaking at Gordon College on Saturday July 28 as part of the American Scientific Affiliation (ASA) summer  faith/science conference. We shared scholarship opportunities for those coming from a distance last week. ASA has also put together a great $25 local student/postdoc one-day package including a chance to connect with ESN, lunch with  Christianity Today editor Rebecca Randall, and a clambake dinner.  Not a student or postdoc? You can still hear Dr. Collins for $10 or sign up for the whole … [Read more...] about ESN Local Boston: Hear Francis Collins at ASA 2018
