A Case Study in Witness: Ruth in 21C

February 23, 2024 by Rick Mattson Leave a Comment

We appreciate Rick Mattson sharing this excerpt from Witness In The Academy: a guide for graduate students, faculty, and those who minister with them. Rick will be joining ESN in a live conversation about our witness in the academy Thursday February 29 at 8 pm ET. We'd love for you to join us by signing up at tinyurl.com/ESNWitness. As a speaker and trainer for InterVarsity’s Graduate Faculty Ministries (GFM), I find myself frequently on airplanes as I travel to campuses around the country. One afternoon on a flight … [Read more...] about A Case Study in Witness: Ruth in 21C

The Emerging Scholars Network, an effort to equip rising Christian scholars in the United States, is interested in running a series this year at our blog on "______________" Through the Lens of Faith" with the blank comprising the various fields of study in the university. The idea of this series is not an academic piece on integrating your field and your faith so much as your personal reflections on how your faith informs your thinking and practice in your research, teaching, and service. This could … [Read more...] about A Call for Articles on Faith and Fields of Study

A Tribute to Fred Brooks, Computer Scientist and Christian

December 5, 2022 by Hank Tarlton 4 Comments

On November 17, 2022, at the age of 91, Frederick Phillips Brooks, Jr. passed away in his home in Chapel Hill, NC surrounded by family and friends singing hymns. Many tributes have since been published, including excellent ones in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Computer Science Department, and Trinity School of Durham. Fred meant a lot to many people, and I encourage you to read these and other remembrances. To those, I now add my own. Fred was born in … [Read more...] about A Tribute to Fred Brooks, Computer Scientist and Christian

Campus Report: The Faculty Roundtable at The Ohio State University

November 28, 2022 by Bob Trube 1 Comment

Imagine an evening beginning with drinks and appetizers and a dinner with people around the table of diverse disciplinary and religious backgrounds. Imagine courteous but substantive dialogue between two presenters from different faith stances, and extended time for conversation and questions around tables. And then extra time to talk with presenters over more refreshments afterwards. Does that even sound possible? It was, recently, when over 100 university faculty from The Ohio State University and neighboring campuses … [Read more...] about Campus Report: The Faculty Roundtable at The Ohio State University

International Students and Faculty as God’s Global Gift to Us

January 7, 2022 by Bok Chew Leave a Comment

One of my favorite Christmas books is The Other Wise Man, by Henry Van Dyke. Short and delightfully written, the fourth wise man never caught up with the three acclaimed wise men who gave gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the child Jesus. What a loser, one might even say. I'd like to propose that international students and faculty are in fact the wise men. Wise men and women – from the east, west, south, and the north. “The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.” Rev 21:26. International … [Read more...] about International Students and Faculty as God’s Global Gift to Us
