On November 17, 2022, at the age of 91, Frederick Phillips Brooks, Jr. passed away in his home in Chapel Hill, NC surrounded by family and friends singing hymns. Many tributes have since been published, including excellent ones in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Computer Science Department, and Trinity School of Durham. Imagine an evening beginning with drinks and appetizers and a dinner with people around the table of diverse disciplinary and religious backgrounds. One of my favorite Christmas books is The Other Wise Man, by Henry Van Dyke. Short and delightfully written, the fourth wise man never caught up with the three acclaimed wise men who gave gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the child Jesus.
