Pilgrim (parepidemos) tells us we are people who spend our lives going someplace, going to God, and whose path for getting there is the way, Jesus Christ. – Eugene Peterson
It’s been a crazy year for faculty and scholars on many of our colleges and universities. Some of you have been hugely impacted with funding and job cuts. Some of you need to reshape your courses due to political pressure. For many of you, there’s uncertainty and chaos. In the midst of everything that is happening on campus, what does it look like to follow Jesus – both in this specific season and in the regular academic journey?
Although we in InterVarsity’s Faculty Ministry can’t change any of the larger societal forces, we can pray for you and with you. As we’ve prayed, we’ve heard three guideposts from God:
- God is our hope
- This is a kairos moment
- We can walk with you through prayer and formation
Therefore, we invite you to join us for a two-month Faculty Summer Series based on Eugene Peterson’s A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. During July and August, InterVarsity’s Faculty Ministry will provide subscribers of Scholar’s Journey and Campus Calling weekly online devotions and prayer gatherings.
We have also enlisted InterVarsity’s spiritual directors, prayer ministers, coaches, and Attunement – Discernment facilitators to serve you. You can learn more and sign up for individual appointments with these various ministers.
Every Monday, you will receive a short email that includes a Psalm, a short passage from the book, a reflection question, and a prayer. If you’d like to engage with this devotion in community, you can do so online on Wednesdays at 11 am ET using the link in the email. Sign-ups for spiritual direction, prayer ministry, and our other offerings will be in the emails as well.

Jamie serves with InterVarsity Graduate and Faculty Ministries as an Associate Director of Faculty Ministry and as interim Director of the Emerging Scholars Network. Among other things, in this work she enjoys the opportunity to put into practice her doctoral research in literary pilgrimage and training in spiritual direction. She also ministers with the local faculty community at the University of Cincinnati.
