Academic rigor springing from faith

August 18, 2014 by Tom Grosh IV 1 Comment

Faculty Stories – Austin Busch offers a taste of academic rigor springing from the faith of and being shared by an Associate Professor of Early World Literature at SUNY Brockport, even when looking at the Bible. To God be the glory!

Note 1: Yesterday, in Time to “Uncover” I gave attention to the labors of Dr. Lendol Calder. Don’t miss the shared theme of inductive Bible study opening the eyes to similar forms of study and contexts for learning in more than one disciplines (a topic to be considered further)! For additional material on Calder, I encourage you to read two InterVarsity pieces by Sarah Kirk: Financing the American Dream: Interview with the Author and InterVarsity Alumni – Lendol Calder.

Note 2: Renewing & Redeeming the Campus – What Can We Do? provides the notes from a presentation which I gave at the U. of Pennsylvania’s Graduate Christian Fellowship (PGCF). Enjoy exploring this topic more deeply. I should work on redeveloping this in light of the material Vinoth Ramachandra presented in the 2012 Henry Martyn Lectures and the Emerging Scholars Network’s subsequent exploration of dialogue. Anyone interested in discussing Renewing & Redeeming the Campus – What Can We Do? v2.0 on-line, on their campus, in their area/region? This would provide incentive for me to give this attention sooner rather than later 🙂

Tom Grosh IV

Tom enjoys daily conversations regarding living out the Biblical Story with his wife Theresa and their four girls, around the block, at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church (where he teaches adult electives and co-leads a small group), among healthcare professionals as the South Central PA Area Director for the Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA), and in higher ed as a volunteer with the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN). The Christian Medical Society / CMDA at Penn State College of Medicine is the hub of his ministry with CMDA. Note: Tom served with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship / USA for 20+ years, including 6+ years as the Associate Director of ESN. He has written for the ESN blog from its launch in August 2008. He has studied Biology (B.S.), Higher Education (M.A.), Spiritual Direction (Certificate), Spiritual Formation (M.A.R.), Ministry to Emerging Generations (D.Min.). To God be the glory!

I really had no idea that the Christian community is trying to look at the bible through analytical eyes and not just religious eyes.

I am now an atheist wanting to understand the faith without being in it, hopefully becoming more objective about the faith.

About Us

The Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) is a national network within InterVarsity’s Graduate & Faculty Ministries which supports those on the academic pathway as they work out how their academic vocation serves God and others. We encourage and equip undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and early career faculty as they navigate each stage of their academic vocation and transition to the next step in or beyond the academy.
