Advent Table Topic: Be Alert

December 2, 2010 by Tom Grosh IV Leave a Comment

During Thanksgiving holiday, our family of six took the time to prepare for the Christmas rush by giving thanks hitting the brakes, i.e., full stop to breathe catching-up around the house. not pulling out any of the Advent/Christmas boxes from the attic (and we still haven't).   Gasp! But on Sunday, we began a simple practice of Advent with devotions, song, and testimony.   The focus of our daily Advent dinner devotions is how God the Father worked through (and at times counter) to His people in preparation … [Read more...] about Advent Table Topic: Be Alert

Review: The Passionate Intellect

The Passionate Intellect

A couple of months ago, InterVarsity Press sent me a review copy of Alister McGrath's new book, The Passionate Intellect: Christian Faith and the Discipleship of the Mind. I had been looking forward to reading it, but didn't have a chance until last week, when a flu-like illness left me too tired to do much other than read. First, a note on the format of the book: The Passionate Intellect is a collection of thematically-connected essays, based on various lectures and talks given by McGrath over the past couple of … [Read more...] about Review: The Passionate Intellect

Repost: Bobby Gross: Living the Christian Year

Here at the ESN blog, one of our main topics is spiritual formation in higher ed: Christian practices like prayer and Bible study that shape us more and more into the image of Christ. The stress of Christmas may seem to be an unlikely time for spiritual growth, but for centuries, Christians have set aside the season of Advent as a time of spiritual preparation. I had the opportunity to interview  Bobby Gross, Vice-President  InterVarsity Graduate and Faculty Ministries about his book, Living the Christian Year: Time … [Read more...] about Repost: Bobby Gross: Living the Christian Year

With Thanksgiving

November 24, 2010 by Tom Grosh IV 2 Comments

Since you may rightly choose not to swing by the blog tomorrow, here's an advance post. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. --   Philippians 4:6. On Tuesday, a student shared with the  Christian Medical Society  (CMS)/CMDA  at Penn State College of Medicine  the encouragement to read the whole verse, i.e., do not stop at [d]o not be anxious about anything, but be encouraged in every situation, by prayer and petition, with … [Read more...] about With Thanksgiving

ESN Gatherings at Berea and Ohio State

November 23, 2010 by Micheal Hickerson 2 Comments

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit Berea College and (T)he Ohio State University recently. I thought I would let you know how the trips went and how ESN served the different audience. At Berea College, I spoke at the undergraduate InterVarsity "large group" meeting. (IV Jargon Alert! Most InterVarsity chapters have "large group" meetings which gather most of the chapter members for worship and a speaker or some other kind of program, as well as "small group" meetings like Bible … [Read more...] about ESN Gatherings at Berea and Ohio State
